Landscape Restoration Projects, 2025

Wow! That’s a real nice Bladdernut!” is not something we thought we would ever say. But here we are.

The Brucemore landscape celebrates nature in all its forms—no matter the name of the tree or shrub. In the spring of 2025, staff planted 200 Bladdernut shrubs in clusters across the lawn, stretching from the west side of the mansion towards the pond. This ornamental plant gets its curious name from the bladder-shaped seedpods it produces.

Brucemore’s Landscape Restoration efforts focus on using native species to revive the estate’s early 20th century design. Carefully planned plantings shape outdoor “rooms” that invite visitors to wander, explore, and connect with nature. Our goal is to offer a space that provides history, inspiration, respite, and hope. Hope for a future that is green and thriving, right here in Iowa.

Donations to the Preservation Fund support this planting project and many more. These donations play a critical role in maintaining the estate’s historic structures and exquisite grounds. Funds are directly invested in preservation projects that safeguard historic buildings, revitalize the historic landscape, and enhance cultural programs.
