Visit our free permanent exhibit

Located in the central hall of the restored 1911 Carriage House, the permanent exhibit in Brucemore's Visitor Center provides an overview of Cedar Rapids history and is an excellent first step in exploring this remarkable estate.

This informative and FREE orientation examines more than a century of the estate's history with home movies, rare photographs, and artifacts.

Among the Brucemore treasures, you'll find selected clips from the home movies of Howard and Margaret Hall, Brucemore's last private owners, including:

  • Behind-the-scenes on the set of Gone with the Wind
  • Howard wresting with his pet lion, Leo
  • Herbert Hoover's presidential campaign stop at Brucemore
  • University of Iowa's Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick

You'll also find a short film introduction to the Douglas family, who made Brucemore their home from 1906 until 1937, along with a scale model of the 33-acre estate as it looked in the 1920s.
