SUMMARY:Art at Brucemore: Greek Key Terracotta Tile
DESCRIPTION:Embrace your creativity! \nBrucemore is partnering with the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio to bring the final piece of of the tile series to Art at Brucemore! In this unique workshop\, you will receive a pre-made ceramic tile inspired by the terracotta Greek Key tiles that decorate the outside of the mansion! Paint and glaze the tile as you’d like\, connecting your personal masterpiece to the historic architecture of Brucemore. \nThis workshop is hosted in the Brucemore Visitor Center. All instructions and materials are provided during the workshop. Following the workshop\, the instructor will take the projects to the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio for firing in their kiln. DESCRIPTION:Discover over a century of Cedar Rapids history with this self-guided tour of the Brucemore mansion. Explore the first\, second\, and third floors of the mansion at your own pace while taking in the architecture\, artifacts\, and stories of the Douglas family\, who called Brucemore home from 1906-1937. Use the provided tour book with information to start your experience and read stories about what the spaces reflect or how they were used. Interact with hands-on opportunities and ask questions of the knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Head outside after your mansion tour and explore the 26-acres of grounds and gardens on your own at no additional cost. We recommend planning for 45 minutes indoors. \nTickets for guided tours of the mansion are available for advance sale on our website. Guests may also purchase tickets the day of their visit\, subject to availability. DESCRIPTION:Embrace your Halloween spirit! \n‘Tis the season of pumpkin spice and happy haunts\, and Brucemore is partnering with the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio to bring Halloween cheer in this popular workshop! In this class\, participants learn to create their own Jack O’ Lantern trinket using various hand-building techniques. Once sculpted\, participants can add faces\, features\, and texture to their pumpkins and paint them with seasonally colored glazes. Finished projects are approximately 4″x4″ inches in size. \nParticipants will craft and paint their pumpkins at Brucemore. All projects will go back to the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass studio for firing in their kilns. Bring your own snacks and drinks for a fun and relaxed evening of music. \nAbout the Talent: Matt & Kristin Brooks \nMatt & Kristin Brooks are a husband and wife duo from the Eastern Iowa corridor\, and formed their first duo in Austin\, Texas after making the move in 2001. Booking themselves as ‘Cosmic Texas Music’ they infused the spirit of Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris with a Texas version of the alt-country of the time. Since returning in 2012\, Matt is often in the pit for both Theatre Cedar Rapids and City Circle\, while Kristin has been staying active behind-the-scenes in the local theater community. They have hosted evenings at the Opus Concert Café\, been featured guests in several SPT Theatre shows\, and even performed at Brucemore’s Cabaret in the Courtyard series. A lifetime in music has given him a chance to tour the United States and release six CDs of his own music. In 2009\, Scott was living in Florida working with Michael Jackson’s longtime producer/engineer\, Bruce Swedian. Bruce recorded and mixed three songs for one of Scott’s albums. In 2018\, Scott and his wife\, Lynne\, relocated to Britain and continued to record and release music. He saw electricity as a basic human right and battled Edison to make electricity affordable to everyone. He foresaw our modern world and in doing so\, invented the future. \nAbout Cavan Hallman  \nCavan Hallman’s plays have been performed at the National WWII Museum\, National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library\, Strawdog Theatre\, Donny’s Skybox\, The Artistic Home\, RhinoFest\, KAPOOT\, The Elm\, Seattle Fringe\, and Columbia College Chicago. His plays for young audiences have received over 15\,000 performances in elementary schools across the country for an audience of over 5 million students and teachers. He has performed Off-Broadway\, along with other roles in New York\, Chicago\, New Orleans\, and Cork\, Ireland\, where he presented his solo show Not Easily Forgotten. Cavan’s fiction has been featured in the Southern Writers’ Reading Series and the Cane River Reading Series\, and his theatrical essays have been featured in PerformInk. \nCavan is the founding Artistic Director for Mirrorbox Theatre\, currently in its third season as the only company in Iowa that exclusively presents contemporary plays in their Iowa premieres. For Mirrorbox he has directed the Iowa premieres of Exit Strategy\, Red Speedo\, Luna Gale\, There Is A Happiness That Morning Is\, Sender\, and Orange Julius. He serves as the producer for Mirrorbox’s nationally recognized online reading series\, Out the Box\, where he has directed over a dozen performances. \nHe is based in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa. A lifetime in music has given him a chance to tour the United States and release six CDs of his own music. In 2009\, Scott was living in Florida working with Michael Jackson’s longtime producer/engineer\, Bruce Swedian. Bruce recorded and mixed three songs for one of Scott’s albums. In 2018\, Scott and his wife\, Lynne\, relocated to Britain and continued to record and release music. SUMMARY:Restoring a Vision: Recovering Brucemore's Landscape
DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, Brucemore’s landscape has served as a living record\, showcasing the history of the estate and the work of famed landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds who designed much of the estate’s gardens and landscape between 1910-1930. The August 10\, 2020 derecho that brought 130 mph winds to Eastern Iowa dealt a significant blow to the character of the landscape\, causing the loss of hundreds of trees and damaging historic features and buildings. Despite the devastation\, efforts have been underway since immediately following the storm to recover. A community of donors to Pride & Preservation and volunteers have provided critical support. \nDuring this virtual presentation\, Brucemore’s CEO David Janssen and Principal and Founder of S.LA / Seelman Landscape Architecture Brett Seelman will give a behind-the-scenes look at the thoughtful consideration and planning efforts towards restoration that are underway. \nThis presentation is free\, but registration is required. \nThe first presentation in this series is available on YouTube.
