SUMMARY:Virtual Presentation: Derecho Five-Year Anniversary Update
DESCRIPTION:On August 10\, 2020\, a derecho swept through Cedar Rapids at wind speeds of 140 mph. This windstorm caused the loss of 75% of Brucemore’s tree canopy. Despite the impact on the landscape\, Brucemore demonstrated resilience with a focus on rebuilding for the future. Since August 2020\, we have planted just over 1\,100 trees and shrubs\, including 300 trees in the woodland\, a new arched hedge row\, 70 hemlocks\, and 200 bladdernuts. \nJoin us over Zoom to hear from CEO David Janssen about how Brucemore seized the opportunity to replenish the natural features of the 26-acre estate and leave them stronger and more beautiful than ever before. This presentation will explore how our landscape restoration project is creating new experiences for visitors to enjoy across the landscape\, embracing environmental sustainability by using native species and storm-resilient planting techniques\, and enhancing the history of the site by restoring original 1920s landscape features. \nDate: August 13 \nTime: 5:30 PM \nAdmission: Free. Register here to receive the meeting link.

This will be one of your last chances to see the items before they go back into storage! SUMMARY:Free Film Screening of From Iowa and Back: The Vietnam Era
DESCRIPTION:Produced in collaboration with filmmaker Jeremy Glazier and Brucemore’s Artisan Studio\, From Iowa and Back: The Vietnam Era represents years of community engagement\, collaboration\, and storytelling. The film offers a deeply personal exploration of the lives of ordinary Iowans who grew up in the 1950s and 60s\, left the idyllic landscapes of small-town America\, and faced the realities of war in foreign lands. Through Glazier’s lens\, the film chronicles the veterans’ journeys\, from the turbulence of war to the challenges of reintegration upon returning home. It provides a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by a generation whose narratives have often been overshadowed by history. \nA screening of this film will take place in the Veterans Memorial Building armory on November 21 at 6:30 PM with exhibits and a variety of organizations available beginning at 6:00 PM. There will be a Q&A with Jeremy Glazier and others following the film. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required. \nNavigation instructions: \n\nPlease use street parking on the 2nd Avenue Bridge (free after 5:00 PM)\nEnter through the building through the 2nd Avenue Bridge doors\n\nPreview the film: \n\n\n \n\n\n
