SUMMARY:Restoring a Vision: Recovering Brucemore's Landscape
DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, Brucemore’s landscape has served as a living record\, showcasing the history of the estate and the work of famed landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds who designed much of the estate’s gardens and landscape between 1910-1930. The August 10\, 2020 derecho that brought 130 mph winds to Eastern Iowa dealt a significant blow to the character of the landscape\, causing the loss of hundreds of trees and damaging historic features and buildings. Despite the devastation\, efforts have been underway since immediately following the storm to recover. A community of donors to Pride & Preservation and volunteers have provided critical support. \nDuring this virtual presentation\, Brucemore’s CEO David Janssen and Principal and Founder of S.LA / Seelman Landscape Architecture Brett Seelman will give a behind-the-scenes look at the thoughtful consideration and planning efforts towards restoration that are underway. \nThis presentation is free\, but registration is required. \nThe first presentation in this series is available on YouTube.

DESCRIPTION:Every winter\, Project GREEN hosts a series of three educational presentations about gardening and environmental topics. These are held at the Iowa City Public Library\, and are free and open to the public. \nA representative from Brucemore will speak about the impact of the derecho that hit the Midwest in August 2020 with winds of over 110 mph and recovery efforts. The hurricane force winds damaged Brucemore’s 26-acre gardens\, seven historic buildings\, gates\, and much of the statuary. More than 70% of the tree canopy was destroyed.  \nFor the past 100 years\, Brucemore’s landscape has served as a living record\, showcasing the history of the estate and the work of famed landscape architect Ossian Cole Simonds who designed much of the gardens between 1910-1930. This site’s story is a lens to the past and a reminder of the people\, events and drive that shaped the local community. Despite the devastation\, there is hope\, as thoughtful consideration and planning have begun to move forward in restoring Brucemore. \nThe Second Sunday Garden Forums are cosponsored by Project GREEN and the Iowa City Public Library. SUMMARY:Historic Tree Tour
DESCRIPTION:Brucemore and Trees Forever are partnering on a Historic Tree Tour of the 26-acre Brucemore estate. \nMark Vitosh\, Iowa District Forester and Aaron Brewer\, Trees Forever Field Coordinator\, will join Brucemore’s Historic Landscape Manager David Morton. They will be teaching tree ID techniques as well as pointing out and discussing unique tree specimens on the estate. \nFor more information and to register\, click here.  \nTrees Forever is a 30-year-old environmental non-profit on a mission to plant and care for trees and the environment by empowering people\, building community and promoting stewardship. We involve anaverage of 7\,000 volunteers annually through our plantings and events. \nUpdate: The tour is scheduled as planned. Please do not arrive late as the tour departs this building shortly after the start time.  \n\n\nTour: This tour lasts 60 minutes and is fully outdoors. This tour involves walking off paved services.   \n\n\nExplore: Visitors are encouraged to explore the estate.
