If you are tackling a class project or preparing students for a fieldtrip, take a look at these essays. Younger students can “meet” the three families in the Story of Brucemore. This essay is a short summary of basic information.
Teachers and advanced readers can more closely examine each family and the time periods in which they lived. The estate’s history is placed into national and local contexts in four essays: Sinclairs, Douglases, Halls, and Brucemore Today. The essay on the Sinclairs covers the growth of Cedar Rapids and construction of the mansion. Douglas era topics include technology, the arts, and changes to the estate. Howard’s businesses and the couple’s more casual lifestyle are discussed in the piece on the Halls. Brucemore Today highlights activity at the estate since 1981 when it became a National Trust Historic Site and community cultural center.
Brucemore is filled with treasures and stories of other eras. Take time to explore! The History section is also a helpful resource. If you have questions or would like more information, please use the Contact Us form or call 319-362-7375.
